Activities of Alkaline and Acid Phospatase in the Early and Term Human Placentas

Abstract
Two hydrolytic enzymes were studied histochemically in 25 early and 54term hum an placentas.
In alkaline phosphatase, the syncytiotrophoblast has had abundant enzyme activity in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. The activities decreased until l6-14 weeks, and then gradually increased until it reached the peak at term. The cytotrophoblast, on the other hand, in the first trimester had no enzyme activity but certain of these cells acquired alkaline phosphatase activity in abundance in the second and third trimester. In acid phosphatase, there has been marked enzyme activity in the cytoplasms of trophoblasts and Hofbauer cells at 6th week and reached their greatest activities during 9-13 weeks of pregnancy. During the second and third trimester¢¥ their activities in thevilli gradually decreased.
